The great barrier reef tuna

Great Barrier Reef Tuna is a family-owned business that was founded in Cairns in 1990 by the Lamason family. They were pioneers in the local tuna fishing industry and operated a fleet of 13 boats off the east coast. Today, the founder’s son, Rowan working with the local fishers continues the family legacy, delivering premium sashimi-grade tuna to consumers in Australia and around the world. With over 30 years of experience and a commitment to quality, GBRT is a trusted name in the seafood industry, known for their dedication to delivering the very best.

Catch to Consumption

Vessels that capture tuna are recognised for their expeditious turnaround times. Consequently, the fish is delivered within days of being caught. The fish undergoes expert grading and processing, which ensures that it is handled with great care and precision, allowing it to arrive at its destination in optimal condition. This is particularly significant for Tuna, a highly coveted species renowned for its delicate flavour and texture.

Sustainability of the Catch and fishing methods

Onboard monitoring – There are 4 cameras aboard our vessels monitored by AFMA, each facing important sections of the deck and along side the boat to monitor our vessels catch. This information is checked against our logbooks and maintained by the captain so that every catch is recorded and the cameras are always active while the boat is working. This is one of the many ways we can provide data to AFMA who ensure our fishery remains healthy and sustainable and we can ensure our customers (you guys) that we are a transparent brand you can trust and rely on.

Circle Hooks –  A circle hook is a fishing hook manufactured so that the point is turned perpendicularly back to the hook shank. This unique design allows it to hook in the corner of the mouth which is much safer for the fish and this hook has proven to have significantly lower bycatch to other fishing hooks used. This is a voluntary hook and we make sure that all of our vessels are using it.

More details on sustainable fishing practices used by Little Tuna’s suppliers can be found on the AFMA website under Eastern Tuna and Billfish Fishery.
